This is the Eagle nebula in the Sagittarius arm of the Milky Way! It is a region of active star formation about 5700 light years away! The nebula contains several notable features including the famous "Pillars of Creation" (made famous by a Hubble image of the same title) and the "Black Pillar" Spire nearby. To give a sense of scale, the Black Pillar (above the pillars) is 56 trillion miles long!
56,000,000,000,000 miles.
This is a narrowband SHO image, meaning that specific emission wavelengths are mapped to RGB colors in the image:
SII - red
Hα - green
OIII - blue
In this case, I have edited the green channel to simply feed into a brightness layer. This is a representation of almost 6 hours of open shutter time across the three channels!
